There are certain times where you have to take what your child tells you with a grain of salt. Though we want to believe everything our child tells us, they can tend to embellish at times. However when it has something to do with school, we want to be sure that we are listening well. When your child tells you that they don’t like their teacher or that something is amiss, you want to take this seriously. Know that sometimes children say this if they are struggling in the class, but it is well worth looking into if you hear these words. Go off of your gut instinct and do some investigating to decide if in fact your child has a terrible teacher. Here are a few simple ways to detect if this is in fact true.
Watch to See What Happens With Your Child in this Class
One of the best detectors at least initially is the way your child does in this class. If they have always been a straight A student and all of a sudden they are struggling, then you may want to look into this. Sure there may be times when they just have a hard time with the subject and need additional help, but it may have something to do with the teacher. Talk to your child, ask lots of questions, and see what is happening with the homework and the tests. If you start to see something suspicious or if your child is really having a hard time, then it may be best to move onto the next step in the process.
Meet With Them Face to Face
Even if you have a sneaking suspicion that something isn’t right, you want to be sure to meet with the teacher. This is a great way to introduce yourself and to see what their personality is all about. If you have questions about the way in which the class is being taught or about how they conduct the class, then this is a great way to get them out in the open. Proceed cautiously at first because you don’t want to accuse them of anything up front, but let them know that you are an informed and involved parent. Then it’s time to work your charm and show them just how involved you are.
Work at Developing a Relationship
Developing a relationship with your child’s teacher is important for you, for your child, and for the teacher as well. This is above and beyond just an initial meeting because it will work as a gauge for what is happening on a daily basis. This is a great way to see how the communication is from the teacher and how they handle things in general. You need to be the one to decide if things are going the way that you want them to and if your child is suffering. This is a great way to determine if your child is in an unhealthy learning environment or if you need to make any changes. Next steps beyond this would involve going to the principal, but you want to be sure to exhaust all of your resources first.
